Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder that includes repetitive movements or sounds (tics). These sounds and movements are uncontrollable.

Tourette syndrome is also known as tic syndrome. Tics usually are instinctual muscle spasms. They comprise sharp irregular twitches of a group of muscles.

The primary forms of tics are as follows:

· Blinking

· Sniffing

· Grunting

· Throat Clearing

· Grimacing

· Shoulder Movements

· Head Movements

Symptoms of Tourette syndrome:

Symptoms of Tourette syndrome vary from person to person. However, they affect the children of the age group of 3–9 years old. Tics begin with minor muscle tics of the head and neck, and eventually, other tics appear to start in the trunk and limbs.

Psychological Treatment

The symptoms get worsen during:

· Excitement

· Stress

· Anxiety

Tics are more prominent during teen years.

Tics are classified into two types which are as follows:

· Motor tic

· Vocal tic

They are further classified into simple and complex tics.

Simple tics include only one muscle group and are short and brief, whereas complex tics involve different muscle groups that move or go vocal in coordinated patterns.

Below is the table to make you understand the symptoms of tics in a precise manner:

Motor Tics:-

Simple Motor Tics

· Eye blinking

· Head jerking

· Shoulder shrugging

· Nose twitching

· Eye darting

· Mouth movements

Complex Motor Tics

· Touching or smelling objects

· Repeating movements

· Stepping in a particular pattern

· Bending or twisting

· Obscene gesturing

· Hopping

Vocal Tics:-

Simple Vocal Tics

· Grunting

· Coughing

· Throat Clearing

· Barking

Complex Vocal Tics

· Repeating one’s own words/phrases

· Repeating other’s words/phrases

· Using vulgar words

Causes of Tourette syndrome:

The cause of Tourette syndrome is uncertain. However, it is observed that the abnormalities in various parts of the brain and the electrical circuits that connect them may lead to these tics. The exception can be seen in the basal ganglia, the brain that controls motor movements.

Researchers also suggest that genetics may play a prominent role in causing Tourette syndrome. So they’re studying to analyze and identify the specific genes directly related to Tourette.

Diagnosis of Tourette syndrome:

Doctors may ask for some tests to diagnose Tourette syndromes, such as MRI, CT, or EEG scan. However, generally, doctors will ask about the symptoms and observe the signs for at least one year.

Tourette syndrome Treatment:

Your doctor may connect you with the best psychologist to help you overcome stress and anxiety. A psychologist can have a one-on-one session to provide you with a panic attack treatment and psychological treatment. The counseling session will also include awareness training, competing for response training, and cognitive-behavioral intervention. These sessions will help you treat ADHD, OCD, anxiety, and panic attack.

There could be other methods that psychologists may include, such as hypnosis, relaxation techniques, guided mediation, and deep breathing sessions.

There are different medications and neurological treatments involved to treat Tourette syndrome. Nevertheless, it is essential to find support for people diagnosed with this condition to help them fight anxiety and panic attacks.
